Prove It! 2009 National Contest at Woodlands Regional Library

Recently, MRL club had participated in a contest called the "Prove It! National Contest", held at the Woodlands Regional Library.

On 16th March 2009, there is a "Prove It! Regional competition".
The participants are given 2 hours to 10 questions. They can choose 2 relevant sources to help them to solve the questions : E-sources like internet, or books. Some of the questions include " Name one of the harmful substances that are found in tobacco smoke" and "What are the four languages that Switzerland uses?". With limited time and resources to complete the 10 questions, HYSS MRL emerged the top position in the regional sector after beating 133 teams.Raffles Institution came in the 2nd place and Dunman Secondary School came in 3rd.

On 28th March 2009, Hua Yi Secondary School competed in the National Contest of the Prove It! 2009, organized by the NLB and HPB. The finals proved to be extremely tough and the stakes were high as Hua Yi had to compete against Raffles Institution and Dunman Secondary School. The three teams were given a week to research on a health-related topic and produce a 10 minutes video clip based on the topic " What I'd like the world to know about the effects of smoking on youths."

All three teams had to include citations of the resources they referred to in the video clip which meant that their research and findings had to come from credible and reliable sources. The teams had to prove their claims.

Hua Yi's road to success was not an easy one and the team encountered many difficulties along the way while working on the video clip. Time was extremely tight and the team had to overcome their main obstacle in finding equipment to shoot their video. With zero budget and no proper equipment, the team had to rely on whatever resources they had and steered their creative direction direction o the video according to whatever they had.

The week of late and sleepless nights paid off as Hua Yi emerged as the winner of the National Contest. The team, Siti Nur Amalina, Mazri Ismail and Choon Ying Jie have every reason to be proud of their accomplishments. A total of 56 schools, 136 teams and 339 students participating in the contest and Hua Yi was one of the very few schools to have only one team to take part in the competition. Majority of the schools sent two teams. The MRL members represented their CCA and took part in their first major competition. It is indeed a tremendous achievement not only for themselves, but for their CCA as well.

What made Hua Yi's video clip stand out among Raffles Institution and Dunman Secondary School was the video's ability to create an emotional impact and its creative angle. It touched and created a lasting impression not only with the judges, but with the audience as well.

The team has proved through this competition that with perseverance and creativity, nothing is impossible. Hua Yi, the dark horse, in their competition has proved it in more ways than one.
